Psychic TV visited Stockholm in 1984, playing at Kolingsborg and other venues. We interviewed the band’s frontman, Genesis P-Orridge, and the interview was published in its entirety in issue number three of Fanfar!, released in 1995. Fanzine in Swedish.

The second issue of Fanfar! as a fanzine was the result of clearing out a desk drawer. In 1984, Psychic TV were in Stockholm and I had the opportunity to interview Genesis P-Orridge for Länstidningen in Södertälje. After a shorter version was published, the full transcript was left in a desk drawer and gathered dust for many years. In the same spirit as the three interviews with Lars Cleveman in the first issue, it felt right to publish the interview with Mr P-Orridge in its entirety in 1995.

It’s worth mentioning that Psychic TV were my biggest idols at the time. Genesis P-Orridge was a kind of demigod to me, and I found that branch of industrial music incredibly appealing.
The day before the gig, Genesis P-Orridge was performing a lecture or some kind of performance (or a combination of the two) at the Konstfack art school in Stockholm.
I found my way there and plucked up the courage to ask him if I could conduct an interview the following day. “Sure,” he replied, “but I’ll call you in the morning and we’ll decide the details.” Under different circumstances, this would probably have meant he wanted to politely dismiss me, but Genesis P-Orridge actually called me first thing in the morning.
My first thought after the call ended was that I had to save the phone forever. (No, I don’t still have it.)

The interview went well. Genesis P-Orridge was very amiable and attentive, and just as intense as you would expect from someone who has devoted their life to a conviction.
If you’re interested in Genesis P-Orridge, Psychic TV, and Throbbing Gristle, I recommend the book “Wreckers of Civilisation: The Story of COUM Transmission & Throbbing Gristle”, published by Black Dog Publishing in 1999. Among other things, it provides an in-depth picture of the early years and the contemporary context that shaped Genesis P-Orridge.

Issue 3 of Fanfar! is still in stock.

Magnus Nilsson conducted the interview and took all the photos in the issue.
