After three decades as a leading figure in Swedish instrumental rock — perhaps even the most respected internationally — Robert Johnson and Punchdrunks are releasing “Surf på svenska”, an album that has taken shape over two decades. Inspiration came from Jan Johansson’s “Jazz på svenska”, Swedish folk music, and Swedish popular culture. Here, it is the unexpected elements, such as the accordion, rather than the guitars, that carry the music. The result is a collection of songs balancing nostalgic beauty with a unique, elusive — almost eerie — atmosphere.
“Surf på svenska” is a personal project for Robert Johnson, with each song – from “Yngsjömordet” to “Kalklinbanan Forsby-Köping” – telling its own story. Created using both traditional instruments and modern technology, the album reflects an artist who never compromises his vision. “I’ve spent more time on this album than I’m willing to admit publicly,” says Robert Johnson. “It’s been about creating something that feels unique, something that can only come from me.”
Formed in Solna in 1992, the band has established itself as a distinctive voice in Swedish music over the years, with albums such as “Morte di Seeburg” and “Pills, Thrills and Acting Smart”. Now, with “Surf på svenska”, they are once again showing that they are going their own way, without caring about expectations or genres.
The album has been masterfully mastered by Håkan Lidbo.
“Surf på svenska” is released on Fanfar! and proves that Robert Johnson and Punchdrunks continue to surprise. Release date is 30 January 2026.
